Ängelholm UFO Monument

Ängelholm

It is late evening of May 18th 1946 when the 28-year old railway worker Gösta Carlsson percieved a bright ray of light on his way home through the forest. Following the light, he saw an alien spaceship whose crew was busy with repairs.

A short time later Gösta Carlsson quit his job at the Swedish Railway and founded the company Cernelle. With the production of natural medical products from bee pollen he became a multi-millionaire and famous in Sweden under the nickname Pollenkonung (Pollen King). In the 1960s, Gösta Carlsson was additionally famous for financing the Hockey Club Rögle BK which reached the top league in a relatively short time.

By the way, he claimed that he got the recipe for the medical products from the alien visitors he met in 1946 in the forest. The UFO monument was built in 1972, according to his information as an eye-witness.

Vitabäckskällan has been used as a source of health and breeding ground. It is best known as the rallying point for the peasant uprising against Archbishop Absalon in 1182. In the hay meadow just next to it, several springs with calcareous water rise up and make the meadow rich in orchids, other lime-requiring herbs and shells. The pasture in the valley floor is also affected by calcareous water.

A bubbling spring meets the visitor right next to the parking lot in the Vitabäckshällornas nature reserve. The reserve is located in the northernmost part of the Fyle Valley. An old, easy-to-walk dirt road runs through the Vitabäckshällorna. This walking and cycling route is bordered by forested slopes (slopes) and open, moist pastures at the bottom of the valley. During spring-summer (1/2-15/8) it is forbidden to enter parts of the reserve, but you are always welcome to walk and cycle on the dirt road that takes you through the area.

Trelleborg

In the late 1980s, a sensational discovery was made in the town of Trelleborg on the south coast of Sweden: the remains of a Viking Age circular fort. When investigated this archaeological find soon showed such marked similarities to the Danish circular forts of the late 10th century that it had to be one of their kind: a “trelleborg”, so named after one of the previously excavated Danish forts, Trelleborg near Slagelse in Zealand. The word ’trelle’ is used to describe the sloping head of a split log which supported the palisades. This very distinctive type of fortified compound is associated with the unification and defense of the Danish kingdom. Wood finds, dated by dendrochronology, place these forts around AD 980, in the reign of the Viking king Harald Bluetooth.

Högbergsfältet in Persberg just east of Filipstad is a very strange nature reserve. For one thing, you can stroll through old pine forests and over flower meadows while enjoying a view of Lake Yngern. But you can also explore Värmland's oldest mining field, where one of the mines is even in operation.

The first mines on the Högbergsfältet started already in the Middle Ages and the area is now completely perforated by endless mine holes, hacked and blasted in the hunt for iron ore and rare minerals.

Apart from the Gåsgruvan, where limestone is mined today, the mines on the Högbergsfältet fell silent in 1906, when Torskebäcksgruvan had been taken as far down as 215 metres. At that time, it was a forlorn place where piles of slag were everywhere, fires were burning and the smoke was like a fog over the large work place. A foreign visitor once even called it “hell's front yard. The miserable conditions of the workers, with small huts in the middle of the roaring work meant that the Högbergsfältet saw Sweden's first mining strike in 1869.

Today it is quiet on Högbergsfältet, but everywhere in the nature reserve you can see the traces of the many hundreds of years of mining. Some of the remains are extremely beautiful, such as the ruins built of blue shimmering slag or the fantastic stoll corridor Tilas Stoll. Others bear witness to the everyday life of the miners, such as the underground cellars located on the slopes or the old chapel.

The Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre

Copenhagen

The Royal Danish Theatre, originally the king's theatre at Kongens Nytorv, Copenhagen since 1748, was redesigned by Nicolai Eigtved in 1774. Initially, it had a small ensemble but grew to encompass drama, opera, ballet, and concerts.

The theatre's schools, including the ballet school (1771) and vocal academy, played vital roles in its artistic development. King Frederik VI actively managed the theatre, overseeing details like wages and supplies.

In Denmark's introverted nation following state bankruptcy, the theatre became the center of social and artistic life, inspiring Hans Christian Andersen and artists during Denmark's Golden Age.

After the monarchy's abolition in 1849, the Royal Danish Theatre had to serve the nation. To compete with emerging stages, a new theatre was built in 1874, specializing in opera and ballet.

In recent years, the Royal Danish Theatre underwent extensive changes. The Opera House (2005) and the Royal Danish Playhouse (2008) expanded its offerings. Today, it includes the Old Stage, Opera House, and Royal Danish Playhouse.

Snuvestuan (Cottage of the Hulder)

Klåveröd

In the Klåveröd recreation area, you’ll come across a steep cliff with distinct formations. It appears almost as if an immense stack of rectangular stone blocks have been piled horizontally upon each other. This appearance is likely due to the fact that the cliff was once surrounded by a softer, weathered material, allowing it to withstand the pressure from the ancient ice sheet. The cracks in the cliff were formed through a combination of temperature changes and the actions of ice.

Legend has it that, following the geological tumult, a mythical creature called a hulder took up residence in the small cave nestled at the cliff’s base. A hulder (also huldra in Swedish and Norwegian, and snuva in the local dialect) is a supernatural female creature from Scandinavian folklore, known for her guardianship of the forest and its inhabitants. Her beauty radiates from the front, yet she conceals her back, resembling a hollow tree trunk, and possesses the ability to captivate lonely men who cross her path. Local lore warns that a sexual encounter with a hulder results in the loss of one’s soul.

Centermost, the citadel sits on an island surrounded by its own moat. North of the fort, between the second, third and fourth moat is Sweden's oldest allotment-garden. Several of its garden houses are attractions in themselves.

Also the fortress castle itself hides both history as such as well as historical horrors, like the 16th Century dungeon in the old western tower, into which the unlucky prisoners were thrown down through a hatch.

Kastrup Søbad (Kastrup Sea Bath)

Copenhagen

Kastrup Sea Bath is one of many architectural gems of København’s Ørestad region. Conceived as a fully-accessible outdoor swimming facility, Kastrup Sea Bath transformed an overlooked brownfield site into one of Denmark’s most enchanting, recognisable and popular leisure destinations.

Affectionately known as ‘The Snail’, Kastrup Sea Bath consists of the pool enclosure, as well as a new beach and service building, complete with toilets and accessible changing room. The form was in response to the north-facing beach; a wooden pier stretches from shore and curves around to form a south-facing circular enclosure. The pier gradually rises above the sea level and ends in a five metre diving platform. The circular shape creates a concentrated interior that provides shelter from the wind and the perfect retreat for swimming and sunbathing. A continuous bench runs along the pier, providing additional spaces for leisure and reflection.

Juleboda

Stora Juleboda Gård has ancient origins and no one really knows when it was built. We have found documents from the early 17th century and that there has been a farm here since the 16th century. It has been a long time and many people have lived and worked here. To build a quadrangular farm so close to the sea so long ago was very unusual. Therefore, some believe that it may have had a military purpose from the beginning. Now the farm is surrounded by both beech and pine forests and the heather on the extensive Ravlunda field, but when the farm was once built, the landscape closest to the farm was mostly sand dunes and was isolated with the nearest neighbors in Maglehems village 3 km away.

Freetown Christiania

Copenhagen

Christiania, the famous freetown of Copenhagen, is without a doubt one of Denmark’s most popular tourist attractions. This controversial area is loved by many but has been a turning point for strong debate. For visitors, the area is subject to safety concerns due to criminal activity and drug dealing.

Christiania was founded in 1971 when a group of people cut a hole in the fence to the military barracks in Bådmandsgade. Soon, the area was known for Pusher Street, where you could buy hash and pot – but no hard drugs – from various stalls.

Today, many of the original settlers still live in the collectively controlled village, and the area has a clear 70s feel to it. Around 1,000 people live in Christiania, and every year, more than 500,000 people come to visit.

It is important to know that dealing, buying and possessing illegal substances in any form is against Danish legislation.

Fredensborg Palace, or as it translates into “the Palace of Peace”, got its name as a commemoration of the ending of The Great Northern War in 1722, when the palace was built. The palatial complex was gradually constructed through the 1700s. It was designed by the best Danish architects of the time, J.C. Krieger, Nicolai Eigtved, L. de Thurah and C.F. Harsdorff. The palace and the palace garden as an entirety exemplify the French baroque style – and therefore, the palace is often referred to as Denmark’s Versailles.

The palace is often the setting for important events in the royal family, including weddings, anniversaries and birthday parties. Here heads of state on official visits are received, and foreign ambassadors present their credentials to the Queen. It has been a long-held tradition for visiting state leaders to inscribe their names on one of the window panes of the palace using a diamond pen.

The coastal meadows that extend out to the west of Hovs Hallar have been grazed by animals for thousands of years, developing a very special flora and fauna. The landscape was created when magma forced its way up through the bedrock. Wind and water have since shaped the rocks, creating the dramatic formations of today.

Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece The Seventh Seal was filmed in these areas, and the scene with the protagonist Antonius Block played chess against Death was filmed on the cliffs of Hovs Hallar.

A stone's throw from Glimmingehus is the mighty family mound Bolshögen, which also gave its name to the nearby church village. The mound originates from the Bronze Age and is typical of a cultural settlement that has seen historical continuity from the Stone Age to modern times.

The grave measures about 36 meters in diameter and has a height of about five meters. As should be the case with a family mound, there are several local legends attached to it. Perhaps it is a fairy king named Boel who is buried under the stones, perhaps it is rather the giantess Boel who lies there, buried with all her riches.

The Bol Mound is neither the most visually impressive nor the most accessible Bronze Age mound on the vast plain, but a burial mound that has given its name to an entire village indicates that it was shown some respect and still deserves a visit.

Parking is available at Bolshög's church.
